The Job Role as Head of Data Engineering and Solution:
The Head of Data Engineering and Solutions plays a pivotal role in shaping ISS’s enterprise data foundation. This position provides the architectural direction, operational discipline, and people leadership required to scale our data capabilities and enable a modern, reliable, and cost efficient data ecosystem. This ecosystem forms the backbone of analytics, AI, and business transformation across Group Functions, Global Customer Organisations, and local markets.

Architectural Direction: From an architectural perspective, the role serves as the anchor for building a coherent and future‑ready data landscape. We want to build commercially viable data products on a unified, secure and scalable architecture. And you are responsible for architecting the platform.
This role is critical as it anchors for building a modern, reliable, and cost-efficient data ecosystem that supports analytics, AI, and business transformation in group functions, global customer organizations as well as in countries.
Operational Discipline: By guiding ISS toward a platform‑driven delivery model, the role will help transition the organisation from ad‑hoc project execution to strategic, reusable, and repeatable solutions. It also strengthens collaboration across engineering, analytics, AI, product, and business teams through clear standards and operating models—ensuring that solutions are coherent, compliant, and business‑anchored.
People Leadership: As a people leader, the role oversees distributed engineering teams across Warsaw and Porto, fostering alignment, capability development, and a culture of technical excellence. Effective leadership across these hubs is essential to ensuring consistent delivery quality, operational stability, and ongoing innovation.
Finally, as ISS advances its AI ambition, this role is critical for establishing an AI‑ready data foundation—one that is scalable, secure, trustworthy, and capable of powering the next generation of intelligent agents and decision‑support capabilities.
What you’ll do:
- Own and evolve the enterprise data platform architecture, defining principles, patterns, and roadmaps that ensure scalability, reliability, cost efficiency, and long‑term sustainability.
- Develop and mature core data engineering capabilities, including data ingestion frameworks built in-house, metadata management, orchestration, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and infrastructure‑as‑code.
- Translate architectural strategy into actionable, reusable engineering components that enable teams across Finance, People, Operations, and Customer domains to build solutions consistently.
- Deliver robust, production‑ready data products that power analytics, reporting, digital products, and AI/ML use cases across the enterprise.
- Collaborate closely with Analytics, AI, Product, Security, and Business stakeholders to ensure designs align with functional requirements, risk controls, governance standards, and regulatory needs.
- Define and embed engineering standards and operating models, improving development quality, velocity, platform adoption, and cross‑team coherence.
- Ensure operational excellence by maintaining platform reliability, security, data privacy, lineage, and audit readiness across all environments.
- Drive continuous optimisation, including platform performance, cost management, lifecycle governance, and simplification of the tech stack.
- Lead and develop high‑performing distributed engineering teams in Warsaw and Porto, fostering alignment, technical excellence, and a collaborative delivery culture.
Key qualifications:
- At least 10+ years of technical experience in data engineering and architecture, with a proven track record building and scaling enterprise‑grade data platforms in cloud environment.
- Deep technical expertise in modern data stacks (Databricks, Fabric), including pipeline orchestration, distributed systems, data modeling, Infrastructure‑as‑Code, cloud (preferably Azure) and automation.
- At least 5+ years of leadership and people management experience – ideally overlapping with technical delivery roles including leading distributed engineering teams, building high performing engineering team across hubs such as Warsaw and Porto.
- Strong understanding of how to enable AI on top of the data stack and proven track record for the ability to collaborate with data scientists and AI/ML engineers with a solid foundational knowledge for how they work, which tools they use and how they want to use the data for in use cases to deliver business value.
- Solid understanding of governance, security, and compliance, ensuring data quality, lineage, privacy, and operational reliability across all domains.
- Exceptional cross‑functional communication, capable of translating complex technical concepts into business‑aligned strategies for senior stakeholders.
- English is the official company language.
- Strong strategic problem‑solver who can translate business needs into technical direction and pragmatic solutions.
- Excellent communicator capable of influencing, aligning, and building trusted relationships with senior stakeholders.
- Empathetic people leader who promotes collaboration, clarity, and high performance across distributed teams.
- Comfortable navigating ambiguity and driving structure, prioritisation, and focus in a complex, fast‑moving environment.
